Blue Mackerel Offshore Wind Project

The proposed Blue Mackerel Offshore Wind Project is located off the coast of Brataualung and Tatungalung Country, Gippsland, approximately 10km from the shore between Seaspray and Woodside Beach, Victoria.

The Blue Mackerel team aspires to a genuine partnership with the Gunaikurnai people, the custodians of the Land and Sea Country on which the project is planned. The project site is part of an interconnected cultural landscape that includes both land and waters.

2022

Declared Zone

Following a period of public consultation, the Federal Minister for Climate Change and Energy, declared Australia’s first offshore wind zone in an area of the Bass Strait off Gippsland in December 2022.

2023–2024

Pre-feasibility studies and assessments

Blue Mackerel received its feasibility licence (FL001) in April 2024 for a 163km² area situated 10km off the coast of Gippsland.

2024–2033

Design and approvals

Detailed environmental assessments and marine surveys. Blue Mackerel will engage closely with stakeholders and the community, including identifying opportunities for community benefits.

2033

Construction (2–3 years)

A licence is required for the project to move into the construction phase. When the project is proven to be environmentally, technically, and commercially viable, construction will proceed.

2035

Commercial operations begin (up to 35 years)

Approximately 60-70 wind turbines and associated infrastructure in operation, generating 1GW of sustainable electricity.
